For our film study and the essay which you will need to write for the external examination, you will need to be able to write about visual and verbal film techniques.
We have noted that there are many visual techniques such as:
shot types
camera angles
lighting
mis en scene
costuming
special effects
props
There are only FOUR main verbal film techniques. These are :
music
voiceover
dialogue
sound effects
As well as the above techniques we need to be looking at 'editing' which is the way shots are put together. (These are a part of the visual techniques)
Last week we learned about 'montage', which is like a collage, used to compress time or to show an idea. You will remember that in 'V's address to the people' there was a long montage used during V's voiceover, showing the events of the past and the reactions of four different groups of people, as he spoke.
We also learned that a 'motif' is a recurring image or word. A word motif was 'bollocks' and one recurring image was the 'under the bed' image. We also noted that the idea of 'coincidence' has occurred several times during the film.
Close viewing of the Opening Scene
For those of you who were away last week, here are the class notes from close viewing the opening scene.
This is the the turning point in the film for Evey. It is where she is confronted with the reality of what the the Norsefire Regime has done to her country and the 'inmates' of Larkhill. Although we know that she previously disagreed with the Totatlitarian Government, her fear (as a result of her childhood experiences) made her powerless to go along with Vs plan to blow up Parliament the next Christmas. After her interrogation in the cell and hearing Valerie's story, she realises that she cannot let the interrogator/government win, and that she must hold on to her 'integrity' (her deep belief and knowledge of what is right). Her refusal to give information, frees her from the fear which has controlled her until this point. She is now free go out into the world without fear, and finally to return to V on November 4th and take over where he left off.
